2.) Why was AV-DATA developed?
| IHS Group has had an ongoing interest in serving the aviation industry. IHS Engineering, IHS Group's core information company, developed a microfilm product offering Federal Aviation Regulations, AC's, TSO's and TCD's. As demand for current aviation information and regulations increased, IHS Group transformed the initial microfilm product into a comprehensive and current full text aviation database targeted to aviation professionals in maintenance, training, safety and airport operations. 10.) What are my drive letters?
| Your drive letters are determined by your system. Factors include any peripheral devices local (CD-ROM drives) and any network drive mappings configured during logon. To determine the drive letters under Windows 95, 98, or NT, right click the Start button and then click Explore. Or, double-click on My Computer to view your drive letters. [ Top ] |
11.) How do I tell if which version of Windows I have on my machine?
| During boot up, the Windows version splash screen will display the version of Windows. In addition, you may identify which version you have by double-clicking My Computer, choosing Help, then choosing About Windows. [ Top ] |
12.) How do I know on which network type my PC is running?
| The best way to determine which network you are on is to contact your Network Administrator. You can also look under Control Panel, Network. The lines beginning with Client will indicate which networks for which you are configured. The Primary Network Logon will indicate which is your primary network. [ Top ] |
13.) What are system video display requirements for IHS Windows-based products?
| Generally, a VGA or SUPERVGA monitor is sufficient for displaying IHS applications for Windows. However, some products require higher resolution and larger screen sizes. Consult specific product documentation for requirements, or call AV-DATA Customer Service at 1-800-320-5660 for help. [ Top ] |
14.) What factors affect document print speed for IHS applications in the Windows environment?
| Several factors will influence print speed including the size of the print job (number of pages), network vs. local printing (network printing is influenced by traffic), memory in the printer, and spooling vs. non-spooling print jobs. [ Top ] |
15.) Are there any ways to enhance printing speed?
There are several ways to increase your print speed including:
- Increase memory in the printer.
- Move the printer to a network segment with less traffic.
- Printing over a network occurs differently under Windows 95, depending on the Network Operating System (NOS). In this situation, the data format conversion from Enhanced Metafile Format (EMF) to printer-specific language takes place at the server. This removes the workload from the client and transfers it to the server - freeing up resources at the client and improving performance.
- If you are printing to a Novell or Windows NT server, the EMF to printer conversion happens at the client. This uses local system resources and causes the print job to slow down. Try to print to a shared printer on another Windows 95 station.
- Print spooling will also influence the print performance. In the Printers option in Control Panel, right-click the icon for your printer, then select properties. Click the Details tab, and then Spool Settings. Select Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster, and then click Start printing after last page is spooled if you want the return-to-application time to be faster. This requires more disk space and increases the total printing time. Or, click Start printing after page is spooled which will decrease the amount of disk space needed, but will slow print jobs.

16.) What resources would affect access to the ERC?
The local desktop resources that which would affect ERC access, include:
- Modem speed (if applicable) or processor speed.
- Desktop processor - for best results a Pentium processor should be used.
- Local hard drive - a fast hard drive is desirable due to browser cache management.
- RAM - more RAM is better since it directly impacts the operating system's ability to handle multiple windows.
- Monitor - a 17" local SVGA monitor with 256 or better color palette is advised.
- Desktop wallpaper with low color use.

17.) What kind of printing issues can I expect?
| Printing issues are usually a direct result of the system access speed. Slower connections result in slower printing. It is advised that customers print a maximum of 50 pages at a time. With slower modem connections, the maximum should be reduced. Each site is unique, so some experimentation may be required. [ Top ] |
18.) Explain image access types, issues?
| Currently, ERC uses four different image types: GIF, TIFF, PDF and full-text. GIF images are viewed through the browser and will have a header produced by the browser, which contains the source URL. TIFF images are generally better quality and can be viewed using the Microsoft Imaging for Windows. There is no URL header and the image can be fit to the page. PDF images are comparable to TIFF in quality and do not have a URL header as does GIF. PDF images can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat version 4.0 or better. Full-text images are available for some of the most common documents. With full-text, you can cut and paste directly from the viewer into another document, however you need to download the entire document before viewing. [ Top ] |
19.) How does the time-out work on the ERC?
For all ERC products there are two time-out levels: an ERC time-out and a product time-out The ERC time-out is 60 minutes for all users. If the user does not access any ERC product within 60 minutes of logging in, the user will have to log back in to the ERC to access products.
The product time-out is 10 minutes for all users. After 10 minutes of inactivity, a user becomes eligible for time-out If there is at least one-simultaneous user license available for that username and product, and the user tries to use the session after 10 minutes of inactivity, they will be able to continue their session. If all licenses are in use for that username and product, and the user tries to use the session after 10 minutes of inactivity, they will be timed out and will receive the message: "All product licenses are in use."[ Top ] |
20.) Which viewers do we recommend?
| If you have Windows 95 or NT, we recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or better for viewing PDF image files. [ Top ] |
21.) Why are ERC users limited to 50 image pages at a time?
Web images are delivered to the user as one file. This means that if you requested 300 pages, you would have to wait for all 300 to be converted before any are shipped. Then you would have to wait for the entire file to be sent over the Internet, and you would need to have enough disk space to store the file before they can view the first page. If your disk is full before the file was completely downloaded, you will get an error message that you do not have enough disk space.
Many IHS customers have network administrators that fear large files crossing their networks. If we allow dozens of their users to pull down very large files, their network will experience heavy traffic.
Additionally, Web browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer have a built-in time out feature. If they do not receive a response within that time, they will stop waiting and the user will not get the image although our server is still converting it.
Finally, large image requests can affect the performance of the ERC image server, which is shared by all users. For all these reasons, we have chosen to limit users to 50 pages at a time. If a document is larger, they can request the first 50 pages and then the second set of 50 and so on. On an Intranet system, the administrator can configure the Web Image Server for any number of pages at a time including unlimited.[ Top ] |
22.) What do the ERC blind-login scripts do and why would a customer need it?
The ERC currently requires a single username and password for each customer account. If the customer account represent 2000 users, they would have to distribute that one username and password to all 2000 people. Blind-login scripts alleviate the hassle associated with distributing usernames and passwords by allowing users to login without a username and password requirement. The customer's network administrator places the blind-login page on their internal web server.
Blind login scripts for the UNIX platform can be found at http://www.ihserc.com/blind and scripts for the Windows platform at http://www.ihserc.com/blind/win.[ Top ] | |
23.) What is simultaneous user access and how does it work?
| Simultaneous user access indicates the number of users that can log into the ERC under one username and password. The number of simultaneous users is set up by the IHS Order Management team and is based on the order received. Simultaneous user access is assigned by PCN, for example if you have 35-simultaneous users on ERC AV-DATA, this means a total of 35 users can use the product at a time. |
24.) Where can I find more answers?
| Visit the IHS Customer Support page for help with support on product application, subscriptions, system support and more frequently asked questions. |
25.) How do I search for the newest documents?
| Using the online version of AV-DATA from the Search page, simply click the "Daily Updates" link. This will automatically perform a search over the AD, FR, and NPRM databases and display the most recent documents for the past month. Change the radio button to "Day" and click Search again. This will display the newest documents for those databases for the last 24-hour period. Or, you can manually perform a similar search by choosing "New" and "Day" and any or all Databases you want to search over. [ Top ] |
